The United Nations General Assembly has overwhelmingly endorsed a Palestinian resolution demanding an end to Israel’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank within a year.
The non-binding measure, introduced by Palestine, is based on the International Court of Justice’s (ICJ) advisory opinion in July, which said Israel’s presence in the occupied territories was unlawful.
The resolution received support from 124 countries, with only 14 voting against it, including Israel and the United States. 43 countries abstained from the vote, including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Germany.
In a significant shift, France aligned itself with Ireland, Portugal, Spain, and Belgium in supporting the resolution, departing from its traditionally pro-Israel stance.
