Why do people convert to Islam, and what happens after they become Muslim? The Ayaan Institute is launching a new study to help find out why.
The Great British Convert Study, which is jointly commissioned by iERA and the Convert Muslim Foundation (CMF), aims to build the most comprehensive picture yet of Britain’s Muslim convert community.
There is no definitive figure for how many people convert to Islam in Britain each year, with estimates ranging widely from 30,000 to more than 150,000.
The study will examine not only how many people convert to Islam annually in the UK but also what happens after conversion.
It will highlight the positive experiences of conversion and also investigate some of the challenges that converts face after becoming Muslim.
“We need this picture in order to build a strucutre of institutions around the convert community,” Yahya Birt, Research Director of the Great British Muslim Convert Study, told us on Salaam Britain.
