Hajj 2024: Pilgrims perform ritual stoning of the devil at Jamarat in searing heat

Muslims are performing the symbolic stoning of the devil, the three pillars at the Jamarat, which marks the beginning of the three days of Tashreeq.

The ritual commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s (AS) rejection of Shaitan’s temptations by stoning him. Pilgrims throw pebbles at the three pillars for three days, symbolising defiance against evil.

The days of Tashreeq come after the opening day of Eid. The Quran mentions these days in Surah Al-Baqarah.

“Celebrate the praises of Allah during the Appointed Days. But if anyone hastens to leave in two days, there is no blame on him, and if anyone stays on, there is no blame on him, if his aim is to do right. Then fear Allah, and know that ye will surely be gathered unto Him. (2:203)

It is a time for celebration and worship, where pilgrims feast on the meat from the sacrifice and celebrate Eid.

Pilgrims are performing the rituals amidst searing temperatures. According to officials, at least 14 Jordanian pilgrims have reportedly died due to the intense heat. Temperatures have reached as high as 47C in Makkah.

Saudi authorities have implemented measures to alleviate the impact of the sweltering heat, including providing climate-controlled zones, distributing water, and offering guidance to pilgrims on safeguarding themselves from the scorching sun.

The Ministry of Hajj has wanted pilgrims to keep out of direct sunlight and avoid going to the Jamarat during peak hours.

“As temperatures soar, staying in the camp during the day and adhering closely to the camping schedule is essential,” it said on X.
