Islam Channel is proud to announce that our parent company E Media Group has acquired Tribune — Britain’s oldest democratic socialist publication, which has been running for 88 years.
Our chairman, Mohamed Ali Harrath, will take stewardship of the historic publication — which has offered leftwing perspectives on politics, economics, and culture since 1937 — through the newly formed Tribune Media Group.
This landmark deal ensures the continuation of the Tribune’s proud tradition of anti-fascism, anti-imperialism, and advocacy for peace and equality — while opening new chapters for expansion and growth.
Tribune boasts an extraordinary legacy. Notable former editors include Aneurin Bevan, often referred to as the founder of the National Health Service (NHS), and former Labour leader Michael Foot.
Meanwhile, its roster of iconic writers includes George Orwell, Barbara Castle, Upton Sinclair, H.G. Wells, Doris Lessing, and George Bernard Shaw.
For the voiceless in politics
Mohamed Ali Harrath said: “A new future for Tribune should excite anyone who wants real change, and a better and brighter future for all.”
“The editorial independence and the tradition of Tribune are assured, and I’m confident that it can become an even more powerful voice for the entire progressive left, whether inside or outside the Labour Party, as well as for the huge numbers who feel they have no voice in politics and public life.”
The group will be supported by an editorial advisory board chaired by Labour MP Jon Trickett. It will also include Bhaskar Sunkara, the founder of American socialist publication Jacobin, which previously owned Tribune.
Tribune editor Alex Niven and the existing editorial staff will continue to help guide the publication.
Mohamed Ali Harrath discussed his ambitious plans for Tribune and said that under the new ownership it would increase its print frequency and invest in new platforms — including video content, podcasts, and newsletters — to reach broader audiences in the UK and beyond.
Challenging the establishment
Jacobin publisher Asher Dupuy-Spencer said: “We are delighted that Tribune will continue to be in good hands. Mohamed Ali Harrath has a long history of being an independent voice in the media, of campaigning and of providing a platform to those who are ignored in today’s media and political landscape.”
The publication reaches over 10,000 readers each quarter through its magazine and hundreds of thousands online every month.
Jon Trickett, chair of the Tribune advisory board, said: “The UK is crying out for an alternative to the establishment media. The scourge of growing poverty alongside extreme wealth should be at the top of the news agenda. The voices of socialists, trade unionists, anti-racists, peace campaigners and anti-imperialists need to be heard far more loudly and clearly.”
“Tribune aims to build on its historic socialist and internationalist legacy and speak with and for a new generation”.
