Sir Sadiq Khan has been praised for calling out Donald Trump as a “racist, sexist, misogynistic, and Islamophobic” after the US president used his UN address to launch an attack on him.
Speaking at the UN General Assembly in New York, Trump described London as having “a terrible, terrible mayor,” claiming the city had “changed” and suggesting it was moving toward “sharia law.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan responded to U.S. President Donald Trump's UN speech, calling him racist and Islamophobic after Trump accused him of turning London toward "sharia law" and called him a terrible mayor.

In response, Khan said: “People are wondering what it is about this Muslim mayor who leads a liberal, multi-cultural, progressive and successful city, that means I appear to be living rent-free inside Donald Trump’s head.”
He added: “I think President Trump has shown he is racist, he is sexist, he is misogynistic and he is Islamophobic.”
“When people say things, when people act in a certain way, when people behave in a certain way, you’ve got to believe them,” he said.
On being labelled a “terrible mayor,” Khan noted he was “thankful” that record numbers of Americans continue to visit London.
Unsurprisingly, some right-wing and far-right outlets and politicians in the UK have amplified Trump — the same man who recently said paracetamol causes autism — recycling tired myths about “sharia courts” in the UK.
Meanwhile, more level-headed observers on social media have dismissed Trump’s outburst as a deliberate attempt to sow division.
Others defended Khan’s record as mayor and condemned Trump’s remarks as outright Islamophobia.

The consistent and incoherent attacks by Donald Trump on London Mayor Sadiq Khan underscored the Islamophobia that is mainstream in politics.@SadiqKhan is right to call it out. https://t.co/41ncwpYOHb

I am not shy to say when I disagree with Sadiq Khan. But I also think it's important to say out loud when other politicians get it right.

This is exactly what the leader of a diverse and vibrant city like London should say. Thank you Sadiq. https://t.co/9yEciKVIhm
A taxi driver told me that, under Sharia Law, you can force feed swans paracetamol so that when you eat them you become autistic but never get a headache. So, swings and roundabouts.

As someone who lives and works in London, including in areas of very high deprivation, I can assure you there is no “Sharia Law” being implemented here.

The US Ambassador should be summoned and challenged over Trump’s rampant Islamophobia.

Trump continually spreads lies. In London, we celebrate our diversity and reject racists and bigots. London is the greatest city in the world in huge part due to @SadiqKhan's leadership. pic.twitter.com/UDxaGaRiwT

"I look at London where you have a terrible mayor… Now they want to go to Sharia law."
This is entirely false. London Mayor Sadiq Khan is politically moderate and has never ever called for Sharia law.
This is Islamophobic propaghanda and bigotry. pic.twitter.com/j5ZKkJ2uFA
