New York City recorded the fewest shootings and murders in recorded history during the first seven months of the year — as social media users hail the achievement under the city’s Muslim mayor, Zohran Mamdani.

The New York Police Department said overall major crime fell by 6.6% during the first seven months of 2026.

In July alone, major crime dropped 12.7% compared with the same month last year, with declines across all seven major crime categories and in every borough.

Police Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch said the reductions came despite an exceptionally busy summer that included the FIFA World Cup, Sail250, the NBA Finals and Fourth of July celebrations.

“This summer, the NYPD was called upon to manage an unprecedented series of major and overlapping events, including the NBA Finals, the World Cup, Sail250, and the largest Fourth of July celebration in the country,” she said.

“Through it all, even as the demands on this department reached historic levels, the men and women of the NYPD delivered double-digit declines in major crime and record lows in violent crime across the city.

“For the first seven months of this year and in the month of July, New York City experienced the fewest murders, shooting incidents, and shooting victims in recorded history. These incredible public safety achievements are the result of our data-driven precision policing strategy and the tireless work of the members of the NYPD whose long hours and dedication continue to make New York City safer.”

Shooting incidents fell by 21.3% in July and were down 7.5% for the year to date. Shooting victims declined by 12% in July and 5.5% over the same seven-month period, while murders fell by 32.3% in July and 22.8% year to date.

Burglary, robbery, grand larceny, auto theft, felony assault, and retail theft also declined both in July and year to date.

The news prompted many social media users to praise Mamdani, who became New York City’s first Muslim mayor earlier this year.
