The #Countdown2Ceasefire campaign, which rallied over 60 countries for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza, has culminated in a resounding success as millions worldwide united in their call for peace. The 24-hour livestream which started with the different time zones from the first countdown in New Zealand has officially just finished with the final countdown taking place in Hawaii.
New Year’s Eve, traditionally a time for celebration and resolutions, transformed into a powerful global movement to end the violence that has claimed over 30,000 lives, including over 10,000 children.
As the clock struck midnight in each time zone, people from all corners of the world joined local New Year’s Eve celebrations, morphing the traditional countdown into a profound demand for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel.
Local countdown events were mobilised in diverse regions, spanning from South East Asia to Latin America, symbolizing the global solidarity behind the cause. These events were broadcast and live-streamed across various social media platforms, creating an unprecedented level of engagement.
The success of the #Countdown2Ceasefire campaign is exemplified by the overwhelming response it received. Millions of voices harmonized to demand a “Ceasefire Now,” echoing the sentiments of the United Nations resolution that passed with 153 votes in favour of protecting civilians.
Bushra Mohammad, the campaign spokesperson, said: “The success of this initiative signifies a beacon of hope for those affected by the conflict, as the international community unites to pave the way for a more peaceful and stable future”.
As we usher in the year 2024, the #Countdown2Ceasefire campaign marks a momentous milestone. The global call for peace and unity has not only made a profound impact on New Year’s Eve but has set the stage for continued efforts throughout the upcoming year.
The event may have concluded, but the echoes of the #Countdown2Ceasefire campaign will resonate for years to come as a testament to the collective strength and determination of humanity to strive for a more peaceful world.
