The top 10 stories from the past year

We may be well into a new year but just before we motor ahead, here’s a look back at some of our popular stories from 2021.

These were the ten most viewed blogs on our website last year.

10. Four reasons why the Palestinians are winning the media war

The plight of the Palestinians was front-and-centre again for Muslims last Ramadan. But this time around, something seemed a bit different — the media narrative wasn’t as hostile as it traditionally is towards the Palestinians. In this feature, we looked at the reasons why.

9. Idris Elba condemns Gaza attacks in Instagram post

And here’s one example of why the narrative around Palestine changed — celebrities were more vocal about the injustice.

8. Eid al-fitr announcement

Well, of course, the joyous occasion of revealing when exactly Eid occurs makes our top ten most-read blogs of the year.

7. Malcolm X’s daughter Malikah Shabazz found dead

Malikah Shabazz, a daughter of Malcolm X, died in November. Malikah had never met her much-revered father as he was assassinated months before she was born.

6. Teaching kids how to save through Prophet Yusuf’s (AS) story

A late entry into our top ten list as it’s a story we published only last week. It’s a video about how a new book looks to improve the financial literacy of Muslim kids through the stories of the Quran

5. Fan tells how Leicester’s Hamza Choudhury took his Palestinian flag to celebrate FA cup win

This fascinating feature looks at the story behind how two fans and a steward helped Leicester City’s Hamza Choudhury and Wesley Fofana celebrate their FA Cup win with the Palestinian flag.

4. The Halal Money Show on Islam Channel

Our new series on Islamic finance and investment ran for seven weeks and included explainers and discussions with halal finance experts. You can still watch the series on catchup.

3. When is Eid al-Fitr 2021?

Ramadan is a popular month for us. And so it’s no surprise to see that a story that looks ahead to Eid al-Fitr and explains the significance of the day is one of our most popular blogs for the year.

2. The tech companies providing virtual Hajj experiences

Just missing out on the top spot is this story about two digital companies that created immersive Hajj experiences in Virtual Reality (VR), giving Muslims — hampered by restrictions due to the pandemic — an opportunity to experience the event in VR.
