Trump delivers triumphant “peace” speech as Palestinians return home amid tears and devastation

US President Donald Trump declared that “peace in the Middle East” had been achieved during a speech in Egypt, flanked by a parade of world leaders celebrating the recently brokered Gaza ceasefire.

But while Trump praised the ceasefire, the deal appears fragile, with Israel continuing to kill Palestinians in violation of the agreement.

Israel, in turn, has claimed that Hamas is failing to uphold its side of the agreement by not returning all the bodies of Israeli captives. Hamas said the scale of destruction across Gaza caused by Israel has made it difficult to locate remains beneath the rubble of bombed buildings.

Hamas has already returned all remaining captives to Israel as part of the agreement. In exchange, hundreds of Palestinians held captive by Israel have been released and reunited with their families.

Since the truce took effect, displaced families have begun returning to northern Gaza to search for what’s left of their homes. Many have found only shattered concrete and twisted metal where their neighbourhoods once stood.

Images and videos shared on social media show tearful reunions as Palestinians embrace relatives they have not seen for months, and attempt to rebuild their lives amid the ruins.

Here are some of the videos we’ve shared on social media over the past few days.
