Watch: When fasting became an obligation in Islam

With Ramadan approaching, many people’s thoughts turn to fasting — but did you know that the first obligation of fasting in Islam was actually linked to Muharram, not Ramadan?

In this episode of Your Local Jumuah, the khutbah at Croydon Mosque was delivered by Imam Inam-ul-Haq, who explained the story behind the obligation of fasting in Islam and how it’s linked to the first month of the Islamic calendar.

Although fasting on Ashura was once obligatory, it was abrogated in favour of Ramadan and recommended as a voluntary fast.

He also highlighted the virtues of optional fasts, such as those on the day of Ashura and discussed the importance of Muharram.

The programme also includes a tour of the mosque and an interview with committee member Waqas Khan, who shares insights about the community and activities at Croydon Mosque.
