Djed Spence has made history by becoming the first Muslim to represent England’s senior national football team.
The Tottenham Hotspur defender came on as a substitute during England’s 5-0 victory over Serbia in the UEFA World Cup qualifiers.
While the English Football Association does not record players’ religions, Spence is widely understood to be the first Muslim to appear for the men’s team.
After the match, the 25-year-old shared his joy on X: “Today arguably the Greatest and Proudest day of my life ♥️🦁Honoured to make my England debut🦁A day I’ve dreamt of all my life & now has become a reality🤲🏾 GOD IS THE GREATEST !”
Islam is central to Spence’s life and career, something he frequently highlights on his social media channels
During Ramadan last year, he and his Spurs teammate Pape Sarr were praised by then-manager Ange Postecoglou for performing at the highest level while fasting.
“God is the greatest”
In a recent interview following his England call-up, Spence reflected on the significance of his achievement and the role of religion in his journey.
“First things first, God is the greatest,” said Spence. “I pray a lot. I give gratitude to God.
“In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side.
“When I’m winning, when I’m in a good moment, I promote God as well because he’s always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith.”
Spence also offered a message of encouragement to the next generation:
“If I can do it, you can do it. Not just Muslim kids, any child of any faith. Put your mind to something and you can do it.”
Spence’s debut was widely celebrated online:
