Video: What are the rules of Aqeeqah?

The Aqeeqah is a highly recommended practice — it’s when an animal is slaughtered following the birth of a child.

In this IslamiQA segment, Sheikh Mohammad Tarawneh tells us that the Aqeeqah usually takes place on the 7th, 14th or 21st day after a child’s birth. For a boy, two animals are slaughtered and for a girl, it’s one animal.

Sheikh Tarawneh says making the intention to slaughter the animal — usually a sheep, goat, cow or camel — on behalf of the child is one of the important aspects of the ritual.

“It’s not just the meat; it’s the slaughtering. As well as to cook the meat and feed people as well.”
