When is Eid al-Fitr 2023? With only a few days left of Ramadan, many people’s thoughts will naturally turn towards Eid and when that might be.  

Eid will fall either on 21 or 22 April.  So, if the new crescent moon of Shawwal is sighted on Thursday 20th April, Eid will be on Friday 21st April.  

If however the moon is not spotted, we will conclude 30 days of Ramadan and celebrate Eid on Saturday 22 April.

How Eid al-Fitr is celebrated around the world

Eid al-Fitr means “celebration of breaking the fast” as it marks the end of the month-long fasting of Ramadan.  

It’s observed for three days and allows families to come together and take part in celebrations.  

In Muslim-majority countries, Eid is a public holiday. And around the world, Eid traditions differ based on the local culture.  

In Turkey, people refer to Eid as Bayram, and Eid al-Fitr is known as both Ramazan Bayramı (“Ramadan Bayram”) and Şeker Bayramı (“Bayram of Sweets”). It is customary for young children to go around their neighbourhood, wish everyone a “Happy Bayram” and receive treats.

Meanwhile, Egyptians spend the first day of Eid al-Fitr gathering all family members and celebrating in public gardens. Egyptians like to celebrate with others, so the streets are always crowded throughout the day.

Tunisia celebrates Eid for three days, two of which are national holidays. Special biscuits, including Baklawa and several kinds of “ka’ak”, are made to give to friends and relatives on the day.  

In Pakistan, people refer to Eid al-Fitr as chhotī īd, ‘the Lesser Eid’ or mīṭhī īd, ‘Sweet Eid’. Family members enjoy a special Eid breakfast with various types of sweets and desserts.
