Djed Spence becomes first Muslim player to represent England at a World Cup

Djed Spence has made history by becoming the first Muslim footballer to play for England at a FIFA World Cup.

The Tottenham Hotspur defender came on during England’s 4–2 victory over Croatia in the opening match of the team’s World Cup campaign.

Introduced with around 10 minutes remaining, the full-back made an immediate impact and came close to marking the occasion with a goal.

Islam plays a central role in Spence’s life and career, something he frequently references on social media and in interviews.

Speaking last year after winning his first cap, Spence reflected on the significance of his achievement and the role of religion in his journey.

“First things first, God is the greatest,” said Spence. “I pray a lot. I give gratitude to God.

“In the toughest moments of my life, the darkest moments, I’ve always believed that God has always been by my side.

“When I’m winning, when I’m in a good moment, I promote God as well because he’s always been by my side. It’s a big thing for me, my faith.”

Spence’s appearance is a landmark moment for both English football and Muslim representation in the national team. At a time when racists seek to make minorities feel they do not belong in England, the national team reflects the diversity of modern Britain, with players drawn from a wide range of ethnic, cultural and religious backgrounds.

Commentators say this England squad — made up of players predominantly from minority backgrounds — has the best chance of winning the World Cup since 1966.

A record 13 Muslim-majority countries are competing at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, the competition has expanded to 48 teams, opening the door for more Muslim nations to participate.
