The covering of the Kaaba at the Grand Mosque in Makkah was changed on Wednesday, July 19, to mark the Islamic New Year 1445.
The kiswah used to be changed on the ninth or tenth day of Dhu Al Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic calendar. But it moved to the first day of Muharram last year due to a royal decision.
It is replaced separately for each side of the Kaaba. The covering is raised to the top of the Kaaba and then unfurled over the old covering, which is loosened and lowered.
